On November 7, 2022, AMPECO was fully certified by the OpenADR alliance. OpenADR is an open, secure, two-way information exchange of price and event messages called demand response (DR) which balances distributed energy resources (DER) in real time. It allows electricity providers to communicate DR signals directly to existing customers using a common language and existing communications so that dynamic price signals can be exchanged uniformly among utilities, ISOs, and energy management systems.

AMPECO is openADR certified

Through OpenADR 2.0, AMPECO’s EV charging platform can enable charge point operators to readily integrate their charging networks and participate in demand response events. This allows business owners, especially those based in the US, to generate extra revenue and explore new applications for dynamic pricing, renewable energy integrations, and ancillary services.

Implementing Demand Response Programs with OpenADR

Utilities implement demand response programs to ease the strain on the grid during peak consumption. These optional programs allow participants to accept a signal from their energy provider to reduce their load during peak times. Charge point operators that want to participate in demand response programs can do so easily with a charge point management system that is OpenADR 2.0 certified.

Utilities can leverage OpenADR to evolve their business models around EV charging demand response applications and embrace the new distributed energy paradigm. The OpenADR standard is ideally suited to send price signals making it easy for utilities to price electricity higher in times of power constraint, allowing customers to delay charging when the grid is under stress. OpenADR also enables the grid to optimize and manage the charging station’s power consumption based on changes in conditions or a price signal communicated via OpenADR.

Apart from the rapid delivery of price and event information through a secure network, OpenADR allows for several benefits for utilities and energy providers:

  • Increased grid reliability: Provides standardized DR communication and signaling infrastructure to enable utilities and aggregators to manage growing energy demand and decentralized energy production cost-effectively.
  • Attainment of DR goals: OpenADR-based solutions help utilities achieve peak reduction targets that have been set in many states.
  • Mitigated the impact of Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) events: offers customers options to automatically reduce usage during events to minimize dynamic pricing impact.
  • Enhanced customer value: incentivize customers to control costs and maximize the value of their discretionary electric capacity.

Participate in demand flexibility with AMPECO

AMPECO’s EV charging platform enables charge point operators to participate in demand response events, opening up new business opportunities. With the increased growth of EV applications, there will be continued interest from utilities and energy suppliers toward the adoption of the OpenADR standard. Recognized by IEC as an international standard, OpenADR is becoming the most common standard used by utility and wholesale market DR programs and has already been leveraged in EV charging by utilities in partnership with automotive OEMs. Utilities and city developers increasingly specify OpenADR to enable interoperable and secure networks.

New technologies and standards will empower consumers to exploit EV flexibility. Customers will benefit from more vendor products and opportunities to participate in multiple DR programs that will reward them for responding to power fluctuations.

We look forward to helping businesses find the best customer response to pricing strategies, increase customer engagement, and better manage site and region load with EV charging DR.
