After years of rapid EV charging infrastructure expansion, the conversation is shifting from quantity to quality, but what does this mean for Charge Point Operators (CPOs), EV drivers, and the future of mobility?

Last week, we brought together some of the most influential voices in Europe’s EV charging industry for our highly anticipated annual European EV charging outlook webinar. The discussion offered exclusive insights into the challenges and opportunities that Charge Point Operators (CPOs) face in 2025 and revealed some surprising trends that could reshape the industry.

EV charging industry leaders share unfiltered perspectives

Our expert panel convened leading executives at the forefront of Europe’s EV charging industry, influential figures who rarely share the same stage:

  • Arjan Van der Eijk – COO of EDRI (Eon Drive Infrastructure), managing 6,000+ charge points across 11 European countries
  • Aurélien de Meaux – Co-founder and CEO of Electra, one of Europe’s fastest-growing charging providers
  • Philipp Senoner – CEO and co-founder of Alpitronic, the market leader in high-powered charging solutions
  • Markus Hackmann – Managing Director of P3 Group, leading mobility expert and industry analyst

As they reflected on 2024 and looked ahead to what’s coming, several pivotal themes emerged that will define the industry’s trajectory.

What’s really changing in 2025?

Despite concerns over slowing EV adoption in some markets, the panel highlighted that infrastructure deployment remains strong – particularly for high-power charging (HPC) stations. Exclusive P3 industry data presented by Markus Hackmann showed that the ratio of EVs to high-power charging stations in key European markets (Germany, France, Nordics, and Southern Europe) is reaching what analysts consider the “sweet spot.”

However, this progress comes with new challenges and has triggered a significant shift in how charging networks think about their business. Aurélien de Meaux explains:

We see the market switching from quantity to quality. Initially, investors asked how many sites we had secured. Now they ask how many customers we have, how many charging sessions, and what our revenue is.”

According to Aurélien de Meaux, priorities are evolving beyond deployment numbers alone. It’s about ensuring high utilization, reliability, and a seamless driver experience.

The critical challenge that’s still holding back EV adoption

While infrastructure availability is improving rapidly, the panel identified several persistent obstacles that continue to frustrate drivers and slow the transition to electric vehicles.

One panelist revealed that despite impressive uptime statistics (99% is becoming the industry norm), their research shows that 20% of charging attempts still fail – creating significant frustration for users.

The panel explored practical solutions CPOs are implementing to tackle these challenges through:

  • Advanced reliability tracking and standardized performance metrics.
  • Solutions to grid connection challenges, which continue to slow deployment.
  • User experience innovations, from better payment systems to intuitive app integrations.
  • Customer retention strategies, ensuring EV drivers return to the same networks.

Passenger electric vehicles were just the beginning

Perhaps the most exciting development highlighted during the webinar was the rapid emergence of heavy-duty electric vehicles and truck charging.

Truck battery electric mobility will happen, and it will happen much bigger than we ever expected,” predicted Marcus Hackmann.

The panel explored how this shift is creating entirely new business models and unique charging infrastructure requirements – from megawatt charging to depot-based solutions. The discussion revealed how early movers in this space are positioning themselves to capitalize on what could be the next major growth segment.

What this means for the future of EV charging

The panel’s insights reveal an industry at an inflection point. As we move from early adopters to the mass market, from highway-focused chargers to diverse urban solutions, and from passenger cars to commercial vehicles, the fundamental business of EV charging is evolving rapidly.
