At AMPECO, we’ve witnessed firsthand how the future of EV charging belongs to network operators who can deliver the best customer experiences. Every failed charging session, every hard-to-find charging station, and every complicated payment process is more than an inconvenience – it’s a direct threat to your business growth and brand reputation.
In a recent episode of ChargerHelp’s Charge Forward Speaker Series, I shared my perspective on transforming EV charging networks into powerful drivers of customer loyalty and revenue growth. I’d like to expand on that conversation and reveal how EV charging network operators can leap ahead by embracing the industry’s shift toward integrated solutions.
The three waves of EV charging platform evolution
Drawing parallels with the broader transformation of the SaaS sector, I identified three distinct waves that have shaped our industry’s evolution.
Wave 1: The pioneer’s challenge
The first wave emerged from necessity. With little to no commercial options available, companies built homegrown solutions that were usually part of vertically integrated systems combining software, hardware, support – really everything. While these early solutions laid the foundation for our industry, they often became costly to maintain, were difficult to scale, and weren’t built for the interconnected future of EV charging.
Wave 2: The product era
The second wave brought commercial products promising comprehensive solutions. However, these products, built on earlier technology standards, weren’t designed for the widespread integrations that modern development approaches embrace. Their all-in-one approach, while comprehensive, limited flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing market needs.
Wave 3: The platform era
Today, we’re in what I consider the “third wave,” where the industry recognizes the need for an EV tech stack, much as you see with marketing tech stacks. Modern integration and development methods speed solution development and increase the ability of companies to create unique, differentiated solutions. Companies realize they can’t do everything themselves. Just as we see in marketing technology stacks, where even the most complete products like Salesforce and Hubspot are maximized when integrated with other products, the EV world needs to recognize that many elements are needed to deliver a world-class experience.
This evolution isn’t unique to the U.S. I’ve seen Western Europe, particularly the Nordics and Germany, go through this exercise and develop mature solutions for EV charging.
Making the EV driver experience your strategic edge
AMPECO’s journey to understanding driver experience began before the company was established. Our founders embarked on an EV journey across Europe that revealed critical pain points: broken chargers, difficult-to-find stations, and failed charging sessions. These firsthand experiences showed us why EV charging reliability isn’t just a technical issue – it’s a business imperative.
At AMPECO, we’ve built our approach to transforming the driver experience on three key pillars:
1. Technology Platform: Enabling Branded Experiences
For EV charging network operators, the path to differentiation lies in delivering superior driver experiences through branded, seamless interactions. We enable this through two key approaches:
White-Label Solutions
We offer a comprehensive white-label charging management platform that allows operators to launch their branded experience immediately. We remain entirely in the background and never compete with our customers for driver attention.
API-First Architecture
For larger companies with existing development teams and customer touchpoints, we provide complete access to our functionality through APIs, publicly available for developers to review and learn. This API-first approach allows our customers to create unique experiences integrated with their existing EV tech stack.
While our platform powers all the essential charging operations in the background, the true differentiator in this market emerges from how operators integrate charging into their broader customer experience. This means creating branded experiences that reflect your unique value proposition and market position.
2. Hardware as an integral part of reliability
As a pure EV charging management platform, we don’t dictate hardware choices to our customers, but we recognize that network reliability is inherently tied to hardware performance and compatibility.
We work with more than 80 different manufacturers and have done the OCPP integration with all of them, testing and updating as customer needs change. Our dedicated hardware support team constantly monitors and improves these integrations. We see every issue as an opportunity to improve since it might be evidence of a more widespread issue.
3. The power of strategic partnerships
Our approach to partnerships reflects the evolving needs of charging network operators. We need to support all options and make them seamless, then help our customers determine which approach aligns with their strategy, financial model, and internal capabilities. We need to recognize that delivering a world-class experience requires many specialized elements working together.
This flexibility manifests differently depending on the operator’s business model. For instance, operators with their own maintenance divisions can incorporate our data flows into their existing management tools. Meanwhile, operators without maintenance capabilities face different choices and can choose to build these capabilities, work with existing contractors, or partner with specialized providers like ChargerHelp.
This approach exemplifies the modern tech stack mindset that’s transforming our industry. Rather than trying to build everything themselves, successful companies are increasingly working with tech and service partners for their operations while concentrating their internal efforts on core differentiators. It’s a natural evolution driven by ROI – companies examining their income statements often find that capabilities they built themselves a couple of years ago can now be better handled by specialized partners in the market at a fraction of the TCO.
Future-proofing Your EV Charging Network
Throughout my career working with global brands across enterprise software and SaaS, I’ve observed one constant: the most successful companies maintain a relentless, almost fanatical focus on their customers. We may lose sight of the EV driver in technical discussions, but they need to be at the center of every decision we make.
This customer-obsessed mindset drives these companies to push boundaries constantly. They never accept the status quo. Instead, they continuously experiment, test new ideas, and improve. Crucially, they do this through modern development approaches—leveraging integrations, data exchange, and APIs. The EV ecosystem still has room for growth in this area, and I believe adopting these practices will be crucial for future success.
No company can excel at everything. The strongest players in any sector recognize this and build robust partner networks, bringing in specialists and experts to handle areas where they aren’t as strong. I believe a greater willingness to embrace strategic partnerships would strengthen the entire EV ecosystem.
Capturing the market opportunity
The future belongs to operators who can deliver reliable, branded charging experiences at scale. Every touchpoint, from finding a charger to completing a session, shapes how drivers perceive and interact with EV charging networks. As our industry matures and competition intensifies, the ability to deliver consistent, high-quality charging experiences will increasingly separate market leaders from the rest of the pack.
For EV charging network operators, this means the time to invest in driver experience is now. Those who build the right foundation today – embracing integrated solutions, ensuring hardware reliability, and fostering strategic partnerships – will be best positioned to capture market share as EV adoption accelerates and driver expectations continue to evolve.
