NEVI Formula 2025
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has issued an addendum to the Request for Proposal (RFP) for Round 2 of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program to address an editing issue in the technical application.
The application window opened on October 14, 2024, and questions were accepted until December 20, 2024. The deadline to submit applications is January 13, 2025, at 12 PM CST. Conditional awards will be announced in April 2025.
Funding overview
Over the next five years (federal fiscal year 2022 through 2026), Minnesota is set to receive and invest approximately $68 million from the NEVI Formula Program. MnDOT is at the helm of administering these funds, steering Minnesota towards a future where EV charging is accessible to all.
Eligibility and Key Requirements
The NEVI Formula Program places emphasis on creating Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) with fast charging stations. For Minnesota, these corridors encompass Interstate 94 (I-94) and Interstate 35 (I-35). Key requirements include stations located no more than 50 miles apart along the AFC, within one mile of driving distance from the AFC Exit, and equipped with a minimum of four 150 kW charging ports operating simultaneously. Furthermore, these stations must be open to the public 24/7 without any entry fee.
Overview of Round 1 awardees
Round 1 Conditional Awards for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program awarded a total of $7,378,977.74 to various companies for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations across the state. These awards support the development of fast-charging infrastructure, which is essential for expanding EV accessibility and adoption.
A total of 12 awardees received funding, including prominent companies such as Circle K Stores, Pilot Travel Centers, Kwik Trip, Francis Energy Charging, and Tesla. The award amounts vary, with the largest grant of $828,952.68 allocated to Francis Energy Charging for a site in Burnsville, MN. Other notable recipients include Kwik Trip, which received multiple awards, with the largest being $746,764.20 for a site in Moose Lake, MN. Circle K Stores also secured funding for several locations across Minnesota, including in Moorhead, Sauk Centre, and Proctor, with grant amounts ranging from $302,281.92 to $497,735.52.
These grants will fund the installation of high-speed DC fast chargers that are expected to improve the state’s EV infrastructure, particularly in high-traffic areas. These projects will play a key role in ensuring a reliable and accessible charging network for electric vehicles in Minnesota.
