Austria, nestled in the heart of Europe, is gearing up for a green energy revolution, and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is at the forefront of this transformation. With a slew of incentives and funding opportunities, Austria is making it easier than ever for operators of charging infrastructure and EV owners to participate in this eco-friendly endeavor.

ePremium: Trading CO2 Savings

Austria’s innovative “ePremium” program introduces a groundbreaking concept—quota trading. Charging station operators and EV owners can now sell the electricity generated at charging stations and the corresponding CO2 savings as greenhouse gas quotas to companies with established quotas. This not only stimulates the growth of charging infrastructure but also supports businesses in meeting their environmental commitments.

ENIN – Emission-free Commercial Vehicles and Infrastructure

Austria is committed to transitioning its commercial vehicle fleet away from fossil fuels. The ENIN – Emission-free commercial vehicles and infrastructure funding program is injecting €275 million into this initiative. This funding targets both individuals and legal entities, offering to cover a substantial 80 percent of the additional investment costs for the purchase of emission-free commercial vehicles. Additionally, 40 percent of the net acquisition costs for charging infrastructure are also eligible for funding. This initiative encompasses fleet, workplace, commercial, and residential charging solutions, with a deadline set for June 30, 2024.

eMobility Funding Budget

The Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK) in Austria is proactively supporting the adoption of e-charging points for operational use. Companies and entrepreneurial organizations, along with public regional authorities, associations, and denominational institutions, can seek funding for constructing e-charging points where electricity solely derives from renewable energy sources. Each funded charging point must meet stringent individual security requirements. Businesses can receive up to €2,500 for public AC charging stations, and up to €30,000 for DC stations. The funding for non-public charging stations is €900 for AC stations and €20,000 for DC stations. The government supports installation of EV charging stations which operate with electricity from renewable sources. The funding for such stations is up to €30,000. The application window closes on March 31, 2024.

Residential EV Charging Incentives

Austria’s residential EV charging incentives are a boon for eco-conscious residents. Those who can verify their electricity source as 100 percent renewable are eligible for these subsidies:

  • A €600 subsidy for the purchase and installation of domestic charging stations in single or two-family dwellings.
  • A €900 subsidy for OCPP-compliant stations in multi-unit dwellings for single-use installations.
  • A €1,800 subsidy for OCPP-compliant stations for individuals as part of multi-use installations.

But the clock is ticking; requests for funding should be registered by the end of 2023.

Bonus Incentive

Austria is offering a bonus incentive for private use EV charging infrastructure until December 31, 2023:

  • €600 for an intelligent loading cable.
  • €600 for a wallbox (single/double house).
  • €900 for a wallbox (housing complex as single equipment).
  • €1,800 for a wallbox (housing complex as integrated equipment with load management).

Styria’s Charging Infrastructure Funding Package

The region of Styria is doing its part to boost EV charging infrastructure. Residents can receive up to €300 for a three-phase smart wall box and up to €100 for charging cables. Municipalities can obtain up to 50 percent of the costs for purchasing and installing fast charging stations, capped at €100,000. Apartment buildings and settlements can secure funding for planning, installation, and construction work for charging points. Applications for funding are accepted by March 31, 2024. More information can be found here.

Austria’s commitment to EV charging infrastructure is resounding. These funding opportunities align with the country’s ambition to foster a greener and more sustainable transportation ecosystem. Whether you’re an individual EV owner or a business operator, Austria’s programs are paving the way for a cleaner and brighter future.
